According to a CIPD report the average number of sick days per employee in the UK private sector is 6.4. In the public sector it is 9.6 days. (Why are people in the public sector 50% more susceptible to being sick? Are the buildings dirty?) Overall this represents 185 million lost working days at a cost to the UK economy of £17.3 billion.
